Chunchy custard cream fritters

Leche frita
The literal translation for this dessert, which originated in the Basque Country, is "fried milk", but it is in fact a very thick vanilla- and lemon- flavoured custard, which is then cut up into small pieces, coated in egg and sometimes breadcrumbs and deep-fried, then dusted in cinnamon sugar. It's the perfect accompaniment to a café con leche at any time of day.
